NEC Article 625
How the EV charging code shapes your permit drawings.
When an AHJ reviews an EV charging permit, NEC Article 625 is the section their plan reviewer checks. It governs the EV supply equipment (EVSE), its circuits, and protection — so it directly shapes what has to appear on your EV charging station permit design. Here’s how each rule shows up on the plans.
How NEC 625 shows up on your permit set
Dedicated branch circuit
Each EVSE outlet generally needs its own circuit — reviewers confirm it on your one-line diagram and panel schedule.
125% continuous load
EV charging counts as a continuous load, so conductors and overcurrent protection are sized to at least 125% of the load — it has to show in your load calcs and breaker sizes.
Load management
An automatic load/energy management system can cap demand so more chargers share existing service — documented in your general notes.
Disconnecting means
Equipment rated over 60 A or over 150 V to ground needs a disconnecting means — called out and located on the plans.
Equipment & wiring details
Listing, cable length, and EVSE location requirements that land in your equipment specs and notes.
Your AHJ’s NEC edition
Requirements differ between NEC 2017, 2020, and 2023 — the plan set must match the edition your AHJ has adopted.
How Article 625 works with Article 220
Article 625 sets the rules for the EVSE and its circuits; Article 220 governs the service and feeder load calculations that prove your electrical service can carry the new charging load. Together they determine the conductor sizes, overcurrent protection, and service-upgrade-or-load-management call that a reviewer expects to see.
How ELDAPRO keeps your drawings 625-compliant
ELDAPRO sizes equipment, cables, and conduits to the NEC edition your AHJ has adopted (NEC 2023 or NEC 2020), applies the continuous-load rule automatically, and prints the code references in your drawing general notes — so what the reviewer is checking for is already on the sheet. When load management is used, the notes document how demand is limited.
